Frequently Asked Questions

General

Can I still install decking if my garden is sloped?

Absolutely! We can assist in designing a deck that incorporates steps and layers to manage the slope. In some cases, we might also be able to excavate the ground or add supports to create a flat deck.

Is it possible to place a hot tub on my deck?

The feasibility of this depends on your deck's design and height. However, in most instances, if this is factored into the design from the start, we can reinforce the deck to accommodate the additional weight.

There is a drain in our garden that we occasionally need to access – does this mean that we cannot have a deck?

Not at all. Due to the versatility of decking, a hinged panel can be used to cover the drain and allow access when required.

Do I need to get planning permission for my decking?

Most decking installations don't necessitate planning permission unless they're unusually large (over 50% of the garden space) or excessively elevated. However, it's always a good idea to consult with your local planning office to be certain.

Do I need railings for my decking?

Decks raised 600mm or more above the adjacent ground level must have a surrounding railing at a minimum of 1100mm in height.

How long does it take to construct a raised deck?

Typically once we have a team, tools and materials on site the construction takes on average 3-5 days.

Timber Decking

Is timber decking harmful to the environment?

No, our timber decking comes from certified suppliers, ensuring all wood is sustainably sourced and produced, making it an eco-friendly choice.

Doesn’t timber decking become slippery in wet weather conditions?

Timber is not inherently slippery, but as with any other outside surface, a build up of debris can leave a slippery surface coating. We recommend a good regular clean up of your deck to prevent problems. A suitable anti-slip product or our enhanced grip deck board can be used in high traffic areas such as steps and doorways.

Do i need to treat my softwood decking immediately?

The short answer is, no. Softwood decking boards are usually supplied pressure treated to prevent them from rotting, however this treatment is temporary and once the wood is completely dry you will want to consider treating your decking to prolong its lifespan.

Composite Decking

How do I clean my composite deck?

Quickly and easily! Composite decking requires much less cleaning and maintenance than the timber alternative. For regular maintenance, just sweep away leaves and debris every so often (remember to clear the gaps between boards), and wash the deck with warm soapy water, a scrubbing brush and hose a couple of times a year.

How do I paint my composite decking?

You don’t! One of the great benefits of composite decking is that it is installed as a finished product in your chosen colour.

Is composite decking more expensive than timber decking?

Typically composite decking is more expensive in the short term initial costs, however due to a lack of treatment or the possibility of rotting - it may work out a cheaper long term investment.
